Giant Squids, by god!

This ugly critter was in today's Guardian, prompting outrage from my husband who states it can't be real as nothing has eyeballs that big....! (N.B. apologies for the scanning quality)

Holy Crap!

If those eyes are big... how much HUGER must the truly giant squids eyes be?!?!??!?!

I'm talking about the 200'+ ones that have never yet been photographed, but are known to exist, due to the saucer shaped and sized suction marks etc on their natural predators, the sperm whales...

what titanic struggles must there be in the ocean deeps?

And how intelligent ARE squid? From what little i know, pretty damned smart!

Great pic, Janey!

Live-thats cos its dead!

so i assume it is real then? cos i thought the same about that stupidly huge eyeball, though they dont have two the same size i believe, the other is smaller otherwise there would be no room for the brain.

Oh it's real alright - some ocean photographer guy called Mark Carwardine took it - his website has some fab pics, but none as good as that one (see http://www.markcarwardine.com/main.shtml )

If you look up colossal squid (how sad am I?!) on google you can find various pics of them being dissected, and they do look like they have eyelids. And beaks...evil clacking beaks...

The squid photographed was only a juvenile....

Rob, do squids have brains?!

squids most definitely do have brains... they are extremely intelligent and communicate (or the ones i know about do) through an extremely complex and swift body patterning (bit like chameleons change their colours).. posibly other means, too... just how intelligent they are i don't know...

Other cephalopods, too are very bright... not that i'm saying they could write your english papers for you, mind...
